Description
: At the kiosk in the parking area, you will begin this .5 mile, hiking only trail to a bluff overlooking the remnants of Battery Warren, a Civil War earthen fort built to block Union Forces from moving up the Santee River. As you walk on this mostly level, sandy trail, you will pass through a mixed forest and tall grass. Watch for birds, deer, snakes, and other wildlife. Wear insect repellent during warm weather, and avoid the trail during wet periods. This trail is in an isolated area, so remember to bring water, first aid supplies, and be aware of big game season. Digging is prohibited.

Length: 0.5 miles one-way.

Fees: None.

Directions: From Charleston, drive northeast on US 17 to McClellanville and turn left onto SC 45. Drive to Honey Hill and turn right onto Chicken Creek Road (Berkeley County S-8-103). Drive .7 mile and turn right onto Echaw (FS Road 204). Drive 1.4 miles and keep right where the gravel road splits. Drive another 2.2 miles and turn left onto FS Road 204-A. Drive 1 mile and stay to the right at the fork in the road. The trailhead is another .5 mile at the end of the road. (This area is quite isolated, so pay close attention to the directions. You may also want to check a map and enjoy the nature exhibits at the Sewee Visitor Center.)

Hours: Dawn to dusk.

Camping: No camping.
