Awendaw Passage of the Palmetto Trail

Description:
This easy walking/biking section of the Palmetto Trail connects the Swamp Fox Passage to the ocean and serves as the coastal trailhead for the statewide trail on its way to the mountains. You will follow Awendaw Creek and pass through the surrounding marsh area, which provides a home for many shore birds and other lowland wildlife. A scenic overlook and boardwalk provide and opportunity to stop and enjoy a sweeping view of the area and the Intracoastal Waterway. Use extreme caution when you cross US 17.

Parking and restrooms for trail users are available at Buck Hall Recreation Area. Insect repellant is recommended during warmer months.

Length: 7 miles.

Fees: $5 for parking and boat ramp use at Buck Hall Recreation Area. A $25 annual pass is available..

Directions: From McClellanville drive south on US17 approximately 6.5 miles, or from Awendaw drive north approximately 3 miles and turn at the Buck Hall Recreation Area sign. Drive to the end of the road and the trailhead is at the small parking area on the left. You can also access the Awendaw Passage from the Swamp Fox Passage west of Awendaw.

Hours: Dawn to dusk.

Camping: At Buck Hall Recreation Area.
