South Carolina possesses an incredible variety of
trails that traverse all types of terrain and climate. Opportunities to hike though the
Mountain Bridge Wilderness, ride horseback along the Palmetto Trail in Manchester State
Forest, mountain bike along tree covered single-track, or jog through urban parks are
available at well-established trails throughout the State. The length, condition, and
difficulty of these trails offer a range of challenges for both the novice and more
experienced users. Using South Carolina's trails can also
entail special problems and risks. Lack of adequate signing, confusing land ownership
patterns, extreme temperature and humidity variations, heavy rains, venomous insects and
reptiles, rugged and remote locations, and especially a lack of drinking water along most
trails are common hazards that trail users might encounter. Safe, enjoyable trail outings
can be best assured by obtaining good maps, inquiring about local conditions, and packing
proper equipment and provisions including adequate water and first aid supplies.
This inventory is designed to help trail users and volunteers locate
trail opportunities throughout South Carolina. Necessary maps, permits, and details about
trail facilities and conditions can usually be obtained by contacting the agency or
organization that has jurisdiction over the appropriate area or trail. Local book stores,
map shops, and outdoor stores also carry maps and guide books about South Carolina and the
southeastern United States. See Trails
Bibliography for a
current list of South Carolina trail and outdoor books. |
