Out into the lake but not far from the city, Dreher Island State Recreation Area is a great place to get away from it all. In addition to woodsy hiking trails and lots of places to fish from shore, Dreher Island offers picnicking, camping and lakeside villas.
The Billy Dreher Nature Trail is a short easy walking loop on a peninsula, which passes the ruins at the former site of the Billy Dreher home. You may see ducks, geese, and turtles as you pass along the shoreline. Visitors to this park will find recreational water activities, nature trails and some of the best striped and large-mouth bass fishing spots, all only 30 miles from Columbia.

Directions:From Chapin: Drive approximately 3.5 miles southwest on St. Peter’s Church Road (Lexington County S-32-29) and turn left onto Dreher Island Road (S-32-231). Drive 3.0 miles and turn left onto State Park Road (Newberry County S-36-571) and continue to Dreher Island State Park.
