This is an easy 4.7 mile trail through old rice field impoundments located at the Santee Coastal Reserve.
This 24,000-acre reserve is a Wildlife Management Area that includes two barrier islands accessible only by boat, several marked trails and a boardwalk into a freshwater swamp. The Cape Trail (yellow) is a 4.7 mile trail through old rice field impoundments. You may see nearly every species of Atlantic shore birds and a wide range of animals, such as fox, deer, bobcats, and feral hogs, plus a possible alligator. Rudimentary restrooms are available near the Marshland trailhead.
Area closed to visitors during scheduled hunts.
Directions:From Georgetown: Drive south on US 17 for approximately 15.0 miles. One mile beyond the South Santee River Bridge turn left onto Charleston County S-10-857 (Santee Rd.). Drive for approximately 1.4 miles and turn left at Lillypond Mission Baptist Church onto Santee Gun Club Road. The parking area is 3.0 miles on the right.
