Summary:
Horn Creek Trail is a six mile loop of single track. This trail goes through hardwoods and pines, and contains some pretty good downhills as well as pretty decent climbs. Roots are abundant, as well as a few rocks.
Located in the Lick Fork Lake Recreation Area in Edgefield county, this well marked, wide single track provides a challenge for all levels of riders. You will ride through hardwood bottoms, streams, and along pine ridges with wonderful views of the piedmont. Depending on your skills, you will find riding in a clockwise direction is easiest, but some rocks, tree roots, and steep drops can be an extra challenge to beginners. It is maintained locally by a bicycling club through the Forest Service Volunteer Program.
For those of you who are hikers, the spring and summer months offer a wide variety of wildflowers which attract numerous moths and butterflies. You can extend your hike and enjoyment by also walking the adjoining Lick Fork Nature Trail.
The Lick Fork Lake Recreation Area also offers lake swimming, primitive camping, a nature trail, and a picnic area. Insect repellent is recommended during the warm months.
Camping: There are 25 primitive camping sites accommodating 7 people each. Toilets and showers are available. There is a camping fee at Lick Fork Lake Recreation area.
Directions:From Edgefield: Drive west on SC 23 for 8.2 miles. Bear left onto SC 230, drive .5 miles and turn left onto to Edgefield County S-19-263. Drive 1.9 miles to the entrance on the right, or continue to an alternate parking area. Continue on FS 634 (gravel) and turn right onto FS 640. The alternate parking area is on the right.

This is one of my favorite trails to hike. The terrain varies from walking along a creek through a canopy of trees to open prairie. There is also just enough elevation change to keep things interesting. If you start at trail maker 0.5 and go clockwise, then you will end at the lake in Lick Fork Recreational Area. To get here, set your GPS for Lick Fork Recreational Area. Instead of turning onto the road for the recreational area, continue down Lick Fork Road. As soon as the road turns to gravel, start looking for the trail marker on either the right or left sides of the road. Pull over and park. The clockwise direction is up the hill. This trail crosses gravel roads four times. However, I recommend starting the trail here.
