Summary:
The Outdoor Learning Lab at Batesburg-Leesville High School features an easy-to-follow nature trail that follows Gin Branch Creek—a small rippling stream with large rocks located on the far side of the path. This trail is unknown to most and absolutely worth the short hike for trail enthusiasts.
Enter through the wooden arch onto an easy-to-follow, rolling, dirt trail through a quiet wooded area. You will pass beneath canopy of young trees, you will see outdoor classrooms set up at various points. As you walk, you may also see deer, fox, squirrels, snakes, lizards, and a variety of birds. You can just walk the loop, or continue on an out and back section, which follows a small rippling stream with large rocks on the far side, and ends at the Primary School.
Note: If you are planning to walk this trail during regular school hours, please check with the high school office beforehand.
Insect repellent is recommended during warm months.
Hours: Dawn to dusk
Directions:From US-1 (West Columbia Avenue) in Batesburg: Drive north on Mitchell Street toward Batesburg-Leesville High School. Enter the school and drive to sign for the softball field and turn right onto the road. The trailhead and wooden archway are approximately 100 feet on the right. There is parking in the school lot, or for one or two cars on the road shortly past the trail entrance, as well as parking at the softball field. When finished, you can walk up the gravel road to either the softball field parking area or the high school.
