The West Ashley Greenway is a rail trail in Charleston, South Carolina. It stretches across the West Ashley neighborhood from Main Road in the west to Folly Road in the east.
Although flat and easy, the 10.5-mile, out-and-back West Ashley Greenway is a gem of a trail in the southwest part of Charleston. A portion of the trail is a paved 8' wide asphalt trail, although mostly hard-packed dirt corridor it is a pleasant greenway that starts at a residential and commercial area, then parallels US 17 past neighborhoods, schools, parks, and a marsh before reaching its southern terminus that includes a small parking area and the turn-around point.
Hours: Dawn to dusk
Directions:From Downtown Charleston: Drive west on US 17 and cross the Ashley River. About half-mile after the bridge, turn left onto Folly Road (SC 171). At the second light, turn right into South Windermere Shopping Center. You can begin the trail behind the center on the right.

Anyone have any input? Close friend walked this from where it crosses his neighborhood so about 1.5 miles to Main and back. Then he headed the other way ...about 1 mile in he had already encountered 2 seprate shady folks...so did a u-turn back home. Most unfortunatr, these trails tend to be lonely hidden places for potentially dangerous situations and incidences
