Summary:
Santee National Wildlife Refuge consists of four separate units scattered along the eastern shore of Lake Marion. Hiking along the Wrights Bluff Nature Trail (Bluff Unit) gives you some great views of Cantey Bay, the wildlife farm fields, and numerous wetlands.
From the trail sign at the parking area, begin this shady, level, easy-to-follow loop trail through a variety of habitats that attract birds, deer, fox, rabbits, snakes and other wildlife. You will begin amid mixed pine and hardwood trees, then cross a long boardwalk through a seasonally flooded cypress swamp, before you come to a tall observation platform overlooking an open field. From the platform you will cross on another long boardwalk that passes above the tall plants in a reedy swamp at the water’s edge, then a short distance through wooded habitat, and return to the far side of the parking area.
Do not enter areas marked “closed.” Remember to wear insect repellant in warm weather. Pets are not permitted. Check for current fishing (and other) regulations. Restrooms and drinking water are available at the Visitor’s Center (8 - 4 daily, except government holidays). You can also visit the Santee Indian Mound and historic Fort Watson site, which are located at the end of the park road, just before you turn into the trail parking area.
